Apparel Export Hits US$900Mln in First Two Months
Vietnam earned US$900 million from garment exports in the first two months of this year, an on-year rise of 46 per cent, reported the Ministry of Trade (MoT).
The strong performance was attributed in part to strong demand from the US, which accounted for sales of over US$300 million during the two-month period.
Vietnam also exported more than US$200 million worth of the product to the EU in the same period, much of which came from the sale of men’s and women’s trousers.
The ministry said it expects the sector will maintain 30 per cent growth in trouser export to the EU this year. It gained US$123 million from selling trousers to the bloc last year, up 63 per cent from the previous year.
Trade experts suggested the robust performance of the garment sector was also attributed in part to the fact that China – Vietnam’s leading competitor in the garment-export sector – had begun to rein in skyrocketing export growth in a bid to avoid a re-imposition of quotas and anti-dumping litigation.
