Oregon State University (OSU), ranked among the top 1.4% of universities worldwide, is inviting talented Vietnamese students to join its world-class STEM programs.
During a recent visit to Ho Chi Minh City, OSU President Professor Jayathi Y. Murthy engaged with 300 high school students, offering valuable insights on technology's future and highlighting STEM education's critical role in addressing global challenges. Committed to fostering innovation, OSU provides a transformative educational experience that equips students with the skills needed to excel in today's rapidly evolving global technology landscape.
Vietnam joins the race to bridge the talent gap amidst global technology innovation
Vietnam's tech landscape is rapidly evolving, fueled by a growing domestic digital economy and an expanding global IT market. With a young, dynamic workforce, a supportive business environment, and strategic government investments in digital infrastructure, the country is primed for technological growth.
However, this progress comes with challenges. The Vietnam IT Workforce Report by TopDev (September 2024) reveals a need for 700,000 skilled IT professionals by the end of 2025, with a shortfall of 200,000 skilled workers. This highlights the urgent demand for quality technical education. As AI and related technologies advance globally, Vietnam faces the critical task of developing talent that meets international standards, particularly in technical fields.
NVIDIA's recent decision to establish a research and development center in Vietnam signals the country's growing significance in the global innovation ecosystem. This development, coupled with Vietnam's expanding AI sector, further intensifies the demand for advanced technical education and specialized expertise. The trend is already reflected in student mobility patterns, with Vietnamese enrollment in U.S. higher education reaching 22,066 students in 20242. STEM participation among these students has grown steadily from 46% in 2020-2021 to nearly 48% in 2022-20233, demonstrating strong and increasing interest in technology-focused fields.
Oregon State University opens door for Vietnamese students with leading STEM programs
OSU is ranked among the top 1.4% of degree-granting institutions worldwide by the Center for World University Rankings and has a student body of nearly 38,000 students from more than 100 countries, including over 80 students for Vietnam. It is home to the largest Computer Science program in the United States and has a strong research enterprise, with US$422 million in annual research expenditures and a goal to double that by 2030.
The university’s investment in cutting-edge facilities underscores its forward-thinking vision. One such transformative project is the Jen-Hsun Huang and Lori Mills Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex, made possible by more than US$100 million in philanthropic investments, including a US$50 million gift from OSU alumni couple Jen-Hsun Huang, NVIDIA Founder and CEO, and Lori Mills Huang. Set to open in 2026, the facility will house one of the most powerful supercomputers in the United States, advancing research in AI, sustainability, climate science, and oceanography, and beyond.
Prof. Jayathi Y. Murthy, OSU President, during her recent visit to Vietnam, which attracted more than 300 students at HCMC High School for The Gifted, emphasized: "At Oregon State University, we are opening our doors wide to Vietnam's brightest minds, offering them not just world-class education, but the opportunity to participate directly in research that shapes our collective future. Our advanced STEM programs provide students access to cutting-edge facilities, mentorship from leading researchers, and direct pathways to careers with global technology leaders. We see tremendous potential in Vietnam's young innovators and are committed to helping them develop the skills needed to address the most pressing technological and sustainability challenges of our time.” Oregon State University’s academic excellence is highlighted by its status as home to the largest Computer Science program in the US, as recognized by the American Society for Engineering Education. The university’s growing focus on STEM and AI has made it a top hiring partner for tech giants like NVIDIA, Google, Intel, Amazon, Apple, Boeing, and Tesla, creating direct career pathways for Vietnamese students in emerging technology sectors.
