In an era of globalization and accelerating energy transition, the Vietnam National Industry – Energy Group (Petrovietnam) is proactively expanding its collaboration with leading U.S. partners. This is not only a strategic move to enhance competitiveness but also a firm commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and safeguarding national energy security.

Energy cooperation: Cornerstone of Vietnam–U.S. relations

Three decades after the establishment of diplomatic ties, the Vietnam–U.S. relationship has evolved into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership—with energy cooperation serving as a central pillar. U.S. enterprises have been longstanding partners of Petrovietnam since the early days of Vietnam’s economic opening, with industry giants such as ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and Murphy Oil playing key roles.

Today, these partnerships are being revitalized and expanded to encompass new areas such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), gas-fired power generation, renewable energy, and digital transformation. Petrovietnam has signed a series of key memoranda of understanding (MoU) with U.S. corporations including KBR, GE Digital, and Excelerate Energy, with a shared focus on green technologies such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), green hydrogen, green ammonia, and advanced digital solutions.

Highlights of strategic cooperation

Oil & Gas and LNG: ExxonMobil remains a strategic partner in gas field development. PV GAS is collaborating with ConocoPhillips and Excelerate Energy to build an integrated LNG value chain, strengthening Vietnam’s energy security.

Digital Transformation & Advanced Technologies: GE Digital and Honeywell UOP are supporting Petrovietnam’s digital transformation journey, improving operational efficiency, cybersecurity, and emissions reduction. Microsoft and Petrovietnam have also established a joint task force to explore the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) in the oil and gas sector.

Renewable Energy & Clean Fuels: KBR is partnering with Petrovietnam to develop SAF, green hydrogen, and green ammonia—paving the way for deeper integration into the global clean energy value chain.

High-level engagement: Building connections and a shared vision

In September 2024 in New York, under the witness of General Secretary and President To Lam, Petrovietnam signed a series of MOUs with major U.S. partners, reaffirming its long-term commitment to cooperation. By April 2025, during a working session with U.S. Ambassador Marc E. Knapper, Petrovietnam Chairman of the Members’ Council Le Manh Hung emphasized: “Strengthening collaboration with U.S. partners will enable Petrovietnam to realize its green and sustainable development strategy while further deepening the Vietnam–U.S. Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”

Looking ahead: Creating shared value

Amid the global energy transition, Petrovietnam and its U.S. partners are jointly advancing toward a future of clean, safe, and sustainable energy. This comprehensive cooperation not only brings substantial economic value but also contributes to energy security, sustainable development, and the elevation of Vietnam’s standing on the global energy map. Guided by a clear strategic vision and strong international partnerships, Petrovietnam is steadily asserting its pioneering role in the energy sector—working toward a greener and more sustainable future.
