The Vietnam Railway Corp. (VRC) will spend VND3.86 trillion (US$243 million) for improving the Vinh-Nha Trang railway route in an effort to raise safety and shorten the travel time of the transnational railway service from now until 2010, state media reported.

Currently, the 1,000-km section with many winding mountain tracks does not guarantee safety and limits the whole route’s capacity, VRC officials said.

The Corp. will extend the railway at 17 stations and add a third railway in seven stations as well as replace all the concrete ties and steel sleepers with pre-contra concrete ties from now to 2010, VRC added.

Vietnam has 3,160 km of railway routes in total, of which the "Unification Express Route" from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City is 1,726 km.
