Vietnam to Face Estimated 1Bln kWh Lack in 2007

The Ministry of Industry (MoI) April 20 stated that Vietnam is expected to lack some 1 billion kWh next year and will face continued power imbalances during 2006-2010 in light of growing electricity consumption of 15-17 per cent.

The announcement was released at a seminar entitled “Economical Electricity Usage-Real Situation and Measures” held by the MoI, the Energy Institute and the PG Lighting Co., April 20.

To manufacture a product unit, the industry sector normally consumes as much as 1.5-1.7 times the amount of power used in developed nations, the industry experts highlighted.

At the meeting, the PG firm introduced its compact lights that can save 80 per cent of electricity and have a durable lifespan of more than 6-times the longevity of ordinary light bulbs. PG targets to make two million units of the compact lights this year.

The Vietnamese government has recently approved the two-phase energy-saving program to cut 3 per cent-5 per cent of total power consumption in the 2006-2010 period and about 5 per cent-8 per cent from 2011 to 2015 while reducing some 50 per cent of public lighting across the nation.

Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) is also required to minimize power losses to 11 per cent this year and 9 per cent by 2010.

This summer Vietnam is expected to face a shortage of 180-200 million kWh of electricity. EVN has been asked to negotiate with China to buy electricity via 500kV transmission lines to compensate for the electricity shortages in combination with tapping domestic power sources.
