The European Parliament (EP) will ask for a dialogue with the European Commission (EC) aiming to seek a common solution to the EU’s anti-dumping lawsuit against Vietnamese leather-capped shoe exporters.

The announcement was made by Hartmut Nassauer, Chairman of the European Parliament (EP)'s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs after his three-day visit to Hanoi from May 22-25.

Mr. Nassauer, also Head of the EP's Mission for Relations with Southeast Asian and ASEAN Countries, on an official tour to Vietnam had a dialogue with the National Assembly of Vietnam, including a talk on the EU’s decision to impose anti-dumping tariffs on Vietnamese leather shoes.

During the talk, the Vietnamese side had put forth difficulties caused by the lawsuit, particularly in the context that the leather footwear is a industry that creates a large amount of jobs.

Nassauer said “We will convey this message to the EP. First of all, we will have a talk with the EC about this issue, then possibly by writing.”

The EC has just decided to adopt anti-dumping duties of 17 per cent and 20 per cent on leather shoes imported from Vietnam and China, respectively, under pressure from Europe’s leather shoe industry.

The decision will cause serious damages for footwear distributors, importers, supermarket systems, retail stores and designers in Europe. It will also make millions of European consumers to lose opportunities to buy cheap footwear products from Vietnam and China. The decision will also cause damages for millions of workers in the leather footwear industry in the two Asian countries.
