Vietnam Signs up 4.39Mln Telephone Subscribers in First Half of 2006
Telephone service providers in Vietnam signed up an additional 4.39 million subscribers in the first half of this year, up 130 per cent on year, according to a report released by the Ministry of Posts and Telecom (MPT) in Hanoi on July 11.
This figure raised the total telephone subscription number to 20.18 million, including 12.7 million mobile phone clients, or 62.68 per cent of the total, said the report.
The state-run Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT Group) remained the largest provider with 15.45 million subscribers.
An MPT official said at the reviewing ceremony in Hanoi, the Vietnamese post and telecom industry built nearly 1,000 post offices nationwide between January and June, totaling 18,193 units to date.
Also according to the MPT, Vietnam had 3.36 million internet subscribers by the end of June.
To date, about 13.3 million Vietnamese people had regular access to internet services.
Major posts and telecom service providers in Vietnam include VNPT Group, Viettel, Saigon Postel and FPT.
