Vietnam kept the world’s fastest-growing position in landline telephone growth in the 2000-2005 period with a yearly expansion of up to 44 per cent, according to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU)

Vietnam’s admirable growth far surpassed the world growth average of 5.3 per cent and the Asian growth average of 11.9 per cent, said the ITU statistics.

In the Asian region, South Korea enjoyed a yearly growth of 25.1 per cent in the five-year period while China witnessed a 19.3 per cent annual growth rate.

Also in the five years, Vietnam recorded a yearly mobile phone subscription growth of 62.7 per cent, compared with 38.4 per cent in the Philippines, 35.8 per cent in China, 30.7 per cent in Malaysia, 9.8 per cent in Singapore and 7.4 per cent in South Korea, said the ITU.

The high growth rate of Vietnam is resulted from the thin tele-density in the country, according to Dr Le Truong Tung, chairman of Ho Chi Minh City Informatics Association.

He said, at present the compound tele-density in Vietnam is 29.42 phones/100 residents, lower than the world level of 49.45 per cent and the Asian level of 37.39 per cent.

In the mobile phone segment, the tele-density of Vietnam [15.3 handsets/100 people] is n much lower than that of Singapore at 101.28 phones/100 people and of South Korea at 79.39/100 residents, he added.

Vietnam expects to raise its tele-density to over 40 phones/100 residents by 2010.
