Vietnam State President Nguyen Minh Triet has called on the Ministry of Police to strengthen security for the country’s most important event, the APEC Summit Meetings that is slated in Hanoi in November this year and boost the fight against corruption.
Addressing a meeting with the ministry's leadership August 18, President stressed these tasks should be the main tasks of police forces, adding the police forces will play a core role in detecting and resolutely fighting corruption.
Triet also hailed the police forces for their great efforts in maintaining the national security and peaceful life for people over the past 30 years since the liberation of southern Vietnam on April 30, 1975.
Gen. Le Hong Anh, a Politburo member, the Minister of Police attached great importance to two immediate tasks, protecting the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation summit and strengthening the fight against corruption.
Anh outlined the results of work on the ministry’s tasks during the first six months of this year, urging police forces to timely discover and stop many plots of sabotage, boosting activities to fight criminals to assure security and stabilize people’s living.
Anh added while protecting peace, assuring security and a peaceful life for the people, the force confronted many hardships, but his members have managed to overcome challenges to fulfill tasks assigned by the Party and State.
APEC 2006 in Vietnam is scheduled to comprise of around 100 meetings with the participation of tens of thousands State leaders from Asia and America, which are considered the two most dynamic economic regions in the world.
The APEC region which has a total population of 2.5 billion, an annual GDP revenue of $19 trillion, and making up 47 per cent of the total global import-export value, is the main trading and investment partner of Vietnam. It accounts for 60 per cent, 80 per cent and 65 per cent in Vietnam's total exports, imports and FDI respectively.
Vietnam will spend VND350 billion (around $22 million) for the APEC meetings held for the first time in the nation, expecting to take the precious chance to introduce itself to the outside world.
