Japan reportedly ranked first among importers of Vietnamese seafood in the past eight months of this year, buying 24.4 per cent of Vietnam’s total seafood exports, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

Meanwhile, the EU took 23.4 per cent and the US bought 18.1 per cent of the sum in the period.

As Vietnam’s seafood shipment to the US — formerly Vietnam’s top seafood importer — is currently slumping, local seafood enterprises have timely switched to other markets, especially Japan and the EU.

Vietnam seafood processors have diversified their products, of which catfish replaced white-meat fish to become Vietnam’s number one seafood export product in the EU market.

Vietnam’s seafood exports in August totaled $290 million, raising the export revenue of the first eight months to more than $2 billion, up 20.8 per cent on-year, VASEP reported.

With the stronger growth, the country will easily beat the target of reaping seafood export earnings of $2.8 billion this year, up from over $2.7 billion last year, the ministry said.
