Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), the largest post and telecom firm in Vietnam, has signed a US$20 million contract to buy telecommunications switching systems from LG-Nortel, local media said.

Under the contract, LG-Nortel will complete the shipment of 270,000 circuits of time-division exchange (TDX) switching systems and 140,000 lines of access gateways by the end of November, it said.

LG-Nortel has now become the first supplier of access gateways for Vietnam's next-generation network (NGN) project, it added.

The access gateways will initially be used for VNPT's pre-NGN stage. They will also be connected with soft switches without additional investment when the Vietnamese NGN project, LG-Nortel said.

LG-Nortel, a joint venture formed last November between LG Electronics Inc. and Nortel Networks Corp. of Canada, is now the largest telecommunications switching system supplier in Vietnam with a 23 per cent market share.

The company said it currently operates about 2 million circuits for TDX, PBXs and other switching systems in Vietnam after LG Electronics began shipping the switching systems to the VNPT Group from the early 1990s.
