Vietnam Eyes Higher Tea Output
The Vietnamese tea sector has recently set a target to produce 870,000 tons of tea products in 2010 with some 120,000 tons earmarked for export, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Total revenue from the export product is expected to be US$200 million.
The local tea sector has surpassed its initial plan of US$116 million in export revenue for 2006, as its 11 month’s revenue reached US$120 million.
Export prices of Vietnamese tea products were averaging at $1,040 per ton.
Vietnam now ranks seventh in the world in tea output and sixth in export volume. The country’s tea has been available in 107 countries and territories worldwide, including 18 traditional consumers and 68 WTO members.
The Vietnam Tea Association has strived to promote CheViet trademark in such large markets as Britain, Germany, the US, Dubai, Australia, Thailand, Ukraine, Russia and China.
Some 35 cities and provinces in Vietnam are now planting 125,000 hectares of tea trees with average output of 577,000 tons per year, but still fail to meet demand for tea bud for processing of over 600 tea processing plants.
