Shoe Exports to Fetch $3.55Bln in 2006 Despite Fewer EU Orders
The footwear industry is expected to earn export revenues of US$3.45-3.55 billion this year, compared with US$3 billion last year, despite fewer orders from the European Union (EU) due to the anti-dumping lawsuit, Vietnam News said.
In the first eleven months, the industry shipped abroad more than $3.2 billion, an increase of 19.3 per cent on-year.
The positive performance was mainly triggered by orders from the US market, the country’s second biggest shoe importer after the EU, said the Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association (Lefaso).
The number of exporters shipping footwear to the US has increased remarkably this year, Lefaso said, adding it reported a 40 per cent jump in shoe exports to this market in the first ten months of this year.
The 11-month figure suggested a better picture for the industry than had been anticipated. Exports to key EU markets saw a downturn in the early months of the year when Vietnam was slapped with a punitive duty against leather-capped shoes.
