Norwegian telecom operator Telenor hopes to enter the Vietnamese telecommunication market next year, a corporate official said.

Jon Fredrik Baksaas, Chief Executive, said Vietnam's recent entry into the World Trade Organization increases the possibility of Telenor beginning operations in Vietnam.

Telenor made its first step into Vietnam’s cell phone network market by opening a representative office in Hanoi in April 2006.

Telenor aimed to form a long-term cooperation with Vietnam’s telecoms sector, a company press release quoted Arve Johansen, CEO of Telenor Mobile, as saying.

Johansen said Telenor hoped the partnerships “will be translated into mutually beneficial growth and investment opportunities in the future.”

The country is considered the second fastest growing telecoms market in the world after China.

Vietnam now has over 13 million mobile phone users, which are served by five carriers, namely VinaPhone, MobiFone, Viettel Mobile, S-Fone and E-Mobile.

Several other foreign groups have shown interest in the sector, including France Telecom and Sweden’s Comvik.
