On December 14th 2006, H.E. Mr Bill Tweddell, H.E Mr Peter Lysholt Hansen and H.E. Mr André Haspels, Ambassadors of Australia, Denmark and the Netherlands respectively, met with H.E. Mr Cao Viet Sinh, Vice Minister of Planning and Investment, to sign an agreement formalizing a US$125 million financial grant to support Vietnam’s National Target Programme for Rural Water Supply and Sanitation 2 (2006-2010).
The overall objective of the support programme is “improved health and living conditions of the rural poor, including ethnic minorities, through provision of clean water, sanitation, hygiene promotion and protection of the environment”.

It is expected that as a result of the support programme, nearly 7.4 million people will be served with water and will have the opportunity to improve hygienic practices. Latrines in more than 10,000 schools, clinics and other institutions will be built and some 1.3 million households will have hygienic latrines. The programme will be implemented during a five year period from 2007 to 2011.
