Rubber Exports Reach Record US$1.2Bln
With a record earning of US$1.2 billion, exporting nearly 660,000 tons of rubber products, the Vietnamese rubber sector has now surpassed last year’s figures by 78 per cent in value and US$31 per cent in volume, according to the Vietnam Rubber Association (VRA).
Rubber is now the third largest export earner in the agro-forestry sector following seafood and woodwork.
The increase is mostly thanks to rocketing rubber prices on the world market, caused by thin supplies from large rubber producers like Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.
Le Quang Thung, director of the Vietnam General Rubber Corporation (Geruco) said the export price of Vietnamese rubber rose by VND6-7 million this year, from average VND23 million per ton last year.
Thung said that, of the total 660,000 tons of exported rubber some 100,000 tons were sent to Thailand, Cambodia and Malaysia, and as much as 60 per cent of that was processed by Geruco.
Thung added that 50 per cent of rubber exports are SVR 3L, 20 per cent are SVR10 and 17 per cent are latex.
Vietnam, the world’s fourth biggest rubber producer, now has around 480,000 hectares of domestic rubber plantation.
The country is home to some 70 latex processing factories. Of which, Geruco operates 37 factories with average capacity of 330,000 tons per year. (Trade Dec 22 p1)
