Fujikura Fibre Optics Vietnam: Fine Fibre from Japanese Hi-tech
In 2000, Fujikura Group extended its business to Binh Duong Province, Vietnam with investment of US$3.3 million to build a one hectare factory assembling fibre optic components.
Since its first product exports in May 2001, Fujikura Fibre Optics Vietnam’s sales have risen remarkably. Along with sales, its workforce and reputation have also increased. In 2002, the company employed fewer than 50 people but the workforce jumped to 1,060 employees at the end of Aug. 2006. Sales value increased from US$3 million in 2002 to US$25 million in 2005, and some US$38 million in 2006.
As of March 2006, Fujikura Global Network employed 33,750 workers in 64 subsidiaries, affiliates and associated companies, including 36 companies in Japan and 28 companies in other countries. “As Vietnam was initially not the market for the company’s products, all output was for export to Japan. However, with the strong growth of the Vietnamese telecom market, we expect to sell our products in domestic market” Mr. Sadao Chigira, General Director of Fujikura Vietnam, said. At present, Fujikura Vietnam is assembling fibre optic components for telecom and datacom, with most materials imported from Japan, while some are supplied from the domestic market. Fujikura Fibre Optics Vietnam is now developing domestic materials supply.
After more than five years of operation, the company is constantly supported by technologies from its mother company. In addition to product model improvements, the development of a skilful workforce is a focus for the company. With the policy of developing production in combination with environmental protection, the company obtained the ISO 9001:2000 certificate in 2002, the ISO 14001:1996 certificate in 2004 and ISO 14001:2004 updated certificate in 2006.
