Danish Minister for Development Cooperation visits Vietnam
Danish Minister for Development Cooperation, Mrs Ulla Tørnæs, is visiting Vietnam from 21-25 April 2006 to co-host with Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Mr Cao Duc Phat an international conference on the Mekong River Commission.
The purpose of the conference is to further strengthen the Mekong River Commission’s position as a river basin organisation in the Mekong region. The conference will seek increased interaction between the Commission’s member countries, development banks and donors.
The Mekong River Commission is an intergovernmental organisation with four member states: Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Vietnam. Under a 1995 agreement, member states agreed to cooperate in all fields of sustainable development and in the utilisation, management and conservation of water and related resources in the Mekong River Basin.
Denmark is currently the largest donor to the Mekong River Commission. In December 2006 Denmark provided a total grant of 9 million USD to the Mekong River Commission, including a grant of 7.5 million USD to the MRC Basin Development Plan Phase 2 (BDP2) and 1.5 million USD to the MRC’s Environment Programme.
