China’s Yunnan province and Vietnam should promote trade exchange of their key export products, and boost cooperation in agriculture, mining, and processing of agricultural, forestry and seafood products, said Vietnamese Deputy Trade Minister Luong Van Tu.

Tu also said at a Vietnam-Yunnan trade and investment seminar in Hanoi on April 4 that Vietnam should boost exports of rubber, fruits and vegetables, aquatic products, rice, and wooden products to Yunnan, and import machinery, equipment, steel, fertilizer, and vegetables and fruits from the foreign market.

At the seminar, visiting Yunnan governor Qin Guangrong also said the two sides should enhance cooperation in investment, trade, education, healthcare, science, and social affairs.

Qin Guangrong told the seminar that many Yunnan province firms are keen on investing in Vietnam, considering Vietnam a high potential destination. The two sides should accelerate building the Kunming-Hanoi economic corridor and create favorable conditions to develop trade ties, he said.

Vietnam and Yunnan should focus on export and import of high value products such as mechanical products, electronic goods, and high-tech products, and further cooperation in agriculture, infrastructure construction, engineering, mining, and the processing industry, Qin Guangrong added.

Qin Guangrong also said Yunnan would create favorable conditions for Vietnamese firms to invest in the foreign market.

Vietnam-Yunnan relations have developed in many fields over the past time. Vietnam has become the third biggest trade partner of Yunnan.

Cooperation in tourism, infrastructure construction, minerals, electricity, agriculture, and human resource training between the two sides has shown fine development.

Yunnan and four northern provinces of Vietnam have set up mechanisms for economic cooperation.

Vietnam welcomes 100,000 Yunnan tourists each year, and sends thousands of students to Yunnan to study.

Two-way trade between Vietnam and Yunnan hit US$600 million last year, up nearly 100 per cent against 2005. The figure this year is expected to be US$1 billion.

Yunnan now has 47 projects in Vietnam with total capital of US$2.01 million. The province has sold more than one billion kWh of electricity to Vietnam. (Vietnam Economic Times)
