2nd Round of Vietnam-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement: Negotiation Accelerated
The 2nd round of negotiations on the Vietnam-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) ended after four days of intensive discussion. On March 30, the Japanese Embassy held a press conference and Mr Tanabe, Deputy-Head of the Japanese Foreign Ministry’s Economic Department responded to questions.
Will you please tell us the results of the negotiation?
While the first round was just exploring, the second round has tackled more specific issues. The negotiation is proceeding favourably and paving the way for the next round. However, since the negotiation is ongoing, I cannot be more specific.
Could the negotiation attain the goal set for this year by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung?
The second round has touched on some issues of substance. If the Prime Minister sets goals for this year, we consider it most encouraging. As negotiators, we will try our best to achieve those goals.
How many rounds do you need to conclude the negotiation?
It depends on the conditions of the respective countries. For me, the negotiation is proceeding well, and Vietnam and Japan will not be slower than other countries. The third round will be in mid-May or June. And it is difficult to predict when the negotiation will be concluded.
What are the difficulties and advantages of Vietnam in negotiation, and interests of Japanese businesses in EPA?
It is a difficult question, but I must say that Vietnamese negotiators are very capable. I also know that Japanese businesses are in good contact with the Vietnamese government and very interested in EPA.
Japanese companies wish to increase investment abroad and Vietnam is a most promising destination. EPA will promote Japanese investment in Vietnam.
