The Transportation Ministry has just approved the upgrading of the Cam Ranh Airport in central Khanh Hoa province, which is estimated to cost total VND260 billion (US$14.1 million), said the Central Airport Authority.

Of the sum, almost VND200 billion (US$12.5 million) will be spent on building a new terminal and the balance of VND26 billion (US$1.62 million) on installing a light system for its runway.

The construction, which is expected to be kicked off by the end of the second quarter this year, is considered as a premier step towards upgrading the Cam Ranh airport to an international level in order to meet the demands of passengers and to facilitate Khanh Hoa province’s economic development..

Cam Ranh airport, 35km, south of Nha Trang city, plays an important role in developing Khanh Hoa’s tourism.

The airport, built before 1975, has not yet had a system of light for night flights. Vietnam Airlines began to use Cam Ranh Airport for all its flights to and from the coastal city of Nha Trang in Khanh Hoa Province, from May 19 of 2004. It now can only serve 12 flights per day.
