Vietnam’s largest shipbuilder Vinashin Business Group (Vinashin) plans to build power plants with combined capacity of over 7,000 MW, marking expanding its operations into the electricity sector, local media reported.

Vinashin recently proposed the Ministry of Industry to add its planned electricity projects in the draft scheme for electricity development between 2006-2015 and vision 2025.

The projects are namely coal-fired thermo-power plants of three-turbine 3,600-MW Hau Giang, two-turbine 1,200-MW Ninh Thuan, 220-MW Khanh Hoa-Nha Trang, and 100-MW Cai Lan, and Hai Ha thermal power plants with combined capacity of 2,328 MW.

Vinashin expects the power plants to generate electricity for shipbuilding industrial zones and supporting industries.

The company targets US$1 billion revenue in 2007.

Vietnam, now heavily reliant on hydroelectricity, will shift its energy source structure to thermal power sources after 2010 to serve the nation surging demand. (Investment)
