State-owned Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) obtained a license to build an international seaport in Van Phong Economic Zone in the central coastal province of Khanh Hoa on July 19.

The roughly VND2.9-trillion (US$184 million) international transit seaport consists of two docks for container freighters which range from 6,000 TEUs to 9,000 TEUs.

The construction on the project is expected to begin by the first quarter of 2008 and will be put into operation by late 2010.

The new port’s infrastructure, from loading facilities to management systems, will all meet international standards, a Vinalines official said at the licensing ceremony.

This facility will be a drive to boost up the economy of central Vietnam in general and Van Phong Economic Zone in particular, a Khanh Hoa official said.

The full designed capacity of the 765-hectare port can serve 17 million TEUs a year.

Vinalines is now operating largest ports in Vietnam, including Saigon Port, Haiphong Port, Danang Port and Cai Lan Port.
