Vietnamese government has recently given nod to a VND2-trillion (US$125 million) project building hydropower plant in central highlands Gia Lai province and central Binh Dinh province, local media reported.

The 90-MW hydroelectric plant, due for completion by 2011, will generate 360 million kWh of power annually.

The project, invested by Vinh Son-Song Hinh hydroelectricity joint stock company, will be operated by water from Suoi Day Lake in K’Bang district of Gia Lai province and Dak Dron Bung Lake in An Lao district of Binh Dinh province.

Vietnam’s electricity output was estimated to have grown by 10.6 per cent to 31.33 billion kWh in the first half of this year. Of which, Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN) produced 23.07 billion kWh, an on-year increase of 5.7 per cent while purchasing the rest of 8.26 billion kWh, up 26.8 per cent over the year earlier.
