The Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade is seeking the government’s approval for two Vietnamese companies including Tan Tao Group (ITA Group) and the state-owned oil monopoly PetroVietnam group, and Malaysia's Toyo Ink Group to jointly build Vietnam’s biggest thermal power center, 4,400-MW Kien Luong in south.

Under the proposal, ITA Group will be responsible for constructing 1,200-MW Kien Luong power plant No. 1, the thermal power center's infrastructure and Nam Du deep-sea port complex.

Meanwhile, Toyo and PetroVietnam are responsible for building 1,200-MW Kien Luong power plant No. 2 and 2,000-MW Kien Luong power plant No. 3, respectively.

The Kien Luong thermal power center to cost US$6.7 billion is due for groundbreaking in 2009 southern Kien Giang province with the first operation in 2013.

The power plants in the center are estimated to consume up to 10 million tons of coal a year when fully operational 2016.

Vietnam, now heavily dependant on hydropower, aims to lean to thermal power generation sources after 2010, to raise total capacity of thermal power plants to 15,497 MW by 2011; 27,261-27,811 MW by 2015; 36,721-40,111 MW by 2020; and 52,871-65,111 MW by 2025. (Securities Investment, Investment)
