As many as 8,838 communes or 97.26 per cent of the total across Vietnam have to date gained access to electricity, surpassing the government’s target of 95 per cent set for 2010.

So far, 13.35 million, or 94.31 per cent of the total rural households have used electricity, the paper said, adding that that figure is estimated to reach 95 per cent by year-end.

To this end, Vietnam has been simultaneously implementing a series of rural electrification projects.

Specifically, the underway Rural Energy (RE) II project with a total investment of US$329.5 million is expected to benefit 1,200 communes in 30 cities and provinces nationwide once fully operational next year.

The power project worth VND1,094 billion (US$66.3 million) for the five Central Highlands province is also projected to help 116,067 households in 1,200 highlands villages and hamlets to access power.

Another electricity project costing VND534 billion (US$32.36 million) will supply power for 41,000 or 90 per cent of Khmer households in Tra Vinh and Soc Trang provinces.

The power-thirsting country is taking some drastic measures in an effort to supply electricity for all of households in the country by 2050. (Vietnam Economic Times)
