Vietnam Airlines Reports VND240 Bln Net Profit in 2008
The national flag carrier, Vietnam Airlines, has said that it a pretax profit of VND240 billion (US$14 million) in 2008, compared with US$23 million last year.
Vietnam Airlines reported gross revenue of VND26.61 trillion (US$1.57 billion) last year, up 31.32 per cent on year.
In 2008, the airline carried out 67,200 safe flights with total passengers of 8.817 million, and total cargo of 125,280 tons, up 10.6 per cent and 10 per cent against previous year.
This year, the carrier expected to raise the total passengers by 7.3 per cent to 9.46 million. It will also contribute VND346.7 billion to the state budget.
Vietnam Airlines’ general director, Pham Ngoc Minh, said to meet set target, the airline will improve service quality, adding that from June 2009 to January 2010, it will halt several airplanes for repair.
The director said in 2008 the airline faced a lot of difficulties caused by the oil price hikes. Its fuel expenditure reached VND9.591 trillion, some VND2.1 trillion higher than plan.
Travel demand in international flights decreased by 5 per cent while air im-exports dropping by 30 per cent from previous year. (Vietnam Economic Times)
