Vietnam's Shrimp Exports to Asia Soar

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said the seafood export decreased in the first months of 2009. The biggest declines were seen in traditional markets like the United States (down 31 per cent), the European Union (down over 18 per cent), Canada (down 36 per cent), and Taiwan (down nearly 70 per cent).
However, the shrimp shipment to China and Singapore surged nearly 200 per cent and 121 per cent, respectively.

To boost exports to Asian markets, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development recommended exporters to pay attention to product quality. At the same time, the ministry will enhance the quality management and support trade promotion activities to expand markets and negotiate with foreign importers to weather difficulties.
At present, many shrimp processing factories in Mekong Delta have resumed productions but they fall short of materials. Many have hiked raw shrimp prices by 15 per cent.
