The Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) has raised coal price to domestic coal-fired plants by 27 per cent since March 1 this year in accordance with electricity price hike roadmap.

The price increase is applied to all thermo-power plants run by the state-owned Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN) including Uong Bi, Pha Lai and Ninh Binh; as well as thermal power run by Vinacomin such as Cao Ngan, Na Duong and Son Dong.

In line with the price hike, dust coal classified No. 4 is priced at VND440,690 (US$26,076) /ton, and classified No. 5 at VND407,000 (US$24,082)/ton, Vinacomin said.

Vietnam has not found yet coal sources for 13 power projects with a combined capacity of 13,800 MW, which were declined by EVN and are slated for operation in next five or six years; meanwhile, the country will need about 35 million tons of dust coal and 40 million to 50 million tons of coal to feed these plants.

According to Vietnam’s electricity development plan between 2006 and 2015 with vision to 2025, the country will have to import coal in 2010. (News, Vietnam Economic Times)
