10,000 Vietnamese Overseas Workers Likely To Lose Jobs in 2009
As many as 10,000 Overseas Vietnamese workers will be unemployed and have to return home before labor contracts expire this year due to the global economic slowdown, the Thoi Bao Kinh Te Vietnam newspaper reported last Saturday.
Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, Minister of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs made the warning at the Q&A session of the National Assembly Standing Committee’s 18th session on March 20.
By March 2009, more than 6,000 Vietnamese overseas laborers have had to return home before their labor contract schedule, Ngan added, noting that the figure is increasing.
The country created around 18,000 overseas jobs in the first two months of this year. The country is facing difficulties fulfilling its set target of sending 90,000 workers abroad this year.
Vietnam reported 80,000 unemployed workers in the first two months of this year.
The country will have 63.4 million People of working age by 2015. (Vietnam Economic Times)
