Vietnam has jumped 15 grades in the ratings of global ICT development index, becoming one of the top ten fast growing ICT nations in the world, said the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in its latest report.

The report covered 154 countries worldwide during the period of 2002 and 2007.

The ITU said Vietnam has made much progress in accessing ICT including landline telephone, mobile phone and internet services.

The number of subscribers had risen strongly from two million in 2002 to 24 million in 2007 for mobile phone services, 4.8 landline phones/100 residents in 2002 to 32.6 in 2007. Internet service growth rose to 20 per cent from 1.8 per cent.

The union attributed to the impressive growth to Vietnam’s strong economic growth, the market openness and the government’s commitment to ICT development.

Vietnam is ranked 61st in the world in the 2008 IT industry competitiveness index. (Young People)
