Vietnam's Agro, Forestry, Fishery Production Value +0.9 per cent at VND44.6T in First Quarter

Vietnam’s agricultural, forestry and fishery sectors were estimated to have produced VND44.6 trillion in the first quarter of 2009, up 0.9 per cent against the same period of last year, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).
 
Of the total, the agricultural sector contributed VND33.2 trillion, down 0.1 per cent; forestry sector, VND1.4 trillion, up 2.5 per cent; and fishery sector, VND10 trillion, up 3.9 per cent.
 
As of March 15, 2009, localities nationwide had cultivated 2.986 million hectares of paddy for winter-spring crop, up 2.6 per cent on year, including 1.09 million hectares in the north and 1.89 million hectares in the south.
 
The localities have also cultivated 331,900 hectares of maize; 87,300 ha of batata; 85,800 ha of cassava; 163,700 ha of peanut; 80,500 ha of soybeans; and 391,700 ha of vegetables during the time.
 
In Jan-Mar, cities and provinces across Vietnam have grown an additional 25,300 hectares of forest, up 41 per cent on year, while produced 494,000 cubic meters of wood, up 2 per cent.
 
But the country lost 489 hectares of forest due to fires, up 77 per cent on year, including 61 hectares in Yen Bai, 50 hectares in Cao Bang, 36 hectares in Lang Son, 25 hectares in Lao Cai, 17 hectares in Son La, 17 hectares in Bac Giang, 10 hectares in Lam Dong, and 10 hectares in Long An.
 
Meanwhile, the country reaped more than one million tons of aquatic products, up 5.2 per cent on year, including 783,700 tons of fish and 85,600 tons of shrimp, up 4.9 per cent and 3.1 per cent, respectively. (GSO March Edition)
