Cambodia will be able to sell electricity to some countries including Vietnam by 2016, said Cambodian Secretary of State of Industry, Mines and Energy Ith Praing.

Cambodia will sell 1,000 MW of power in next seven years upon the completion of some dams in western and northwestern Cambodia, and the volume will gradually increase when some other dams are accomplished, the Vietnam News Agency quoted Mr. Praing as saying.

“From 2014, total five hydroelectric dams with a combined capacity of 800 MW will be put in use in northwestern Cambodia, Ith Praing said.
Mr. Victor Jona, Deputy Director General of the General Department of Energy under the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy of Cambodia said the country will become a big energy-exporting country in the region with great hydroelectricity potential.
Currently, Cambodia is importing 220 MW of electricity from Vietnam and 30 MW from Thailand.
The state-run Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN) has been supplying around 40 million kWh of power for the neighboring country through 13 transformer stations along eight border provinces.
EVN and the Electricité du Cambodge (EDC) recently put into operation 220-kV Chau Doc-Takeo power transmission line, as part of preparations to start selling electricity to Cambodia. (Vietnam & World Economy)
