The Vietnam Energy Association (VEA) April 16 submitted to the prime minister for approval a plan to set up the national electricity purchase corporation in a bid to restructure the country’s power sector and abolish the monopoly of the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN).

The expected corporation will operate independently under the directly management of the Ministry of Finance, buy electricity from generation companies and sell it to distributors, said Tran Viet Ngai, VEA’s chairman.

The association also proposed the PM to restructure the National Electricity Dispatching Center (Ao) and assign the Ministry of Industry and Trade to manage the center.

Vietnam is speeding up works on developing a competitive power generation market in a bid to submit it to the Ministry of Industry and Trade for approval in the third quarter of this year. (Pioneer)
