Vietnam to Become One of Largest Mobile Markets in Asia
Vietnam will become one of the largest mobile markets in Asia, with an estimated 120 million subscribers by the end of 2014, equal to the current subscriber base in Japan, the state-run Vietnam News Agency said quoting the New York.-based Seeking Alpha website.
The country will also be one of the fastest growing markets as Vietnamese operators are expected to sing up more 53 million subscribers over the next five years, Seeking Alpha said.
The rising number of subscribers will create a potential boom market for 3G service providers over the next several years.
Assuming 3G serves are available by the end of 2009, Vietnam is expected to have roughly 43 million 3G subscribers, or 36 per cent of the total available, by 2014.
Early this month, the Vietnamese Ministry of Information and Communications officially granted 3G licenses to four operators including Viettel, VinaPhone, MobiFone and EVN Telecom-Hanoi Telecom incorporation.
Viettel, MobiFone and Vinaphone are now the largest operators in Vietnam, which is home to more than 70 million mobile subscribers. They serviced about 85 per cent of subscriptions at year-end 2008.
