Seafood processing plants in Vietnam are forced to run at 25 per cent of their total capacity due to material shortage.

Thin supply also pushed aquatic product price up.

The plants said sugpo prawn price soared by VND20,000-VND30,000/kilogram from early this year to VND145,000-VND150,000/kilogram of 20 shrimps.

To help local plants to cope with difficulties triggered by economic downturn, the seafood sector has suggested the Ministry of Finance cut aquatic import tax to 0 per cent from 10 per cent-27 per cent.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam exported US$1.05 billion worth of seafood in the first four months of 2009, including US$265 million from catfish; US$234 million from frozen shrimp and US$28.4 million from tuna. (vinanet.vn)
