The Vietnamese prime minister has given the green light to a plan to establish the Mekong Delta’s key economic zone, including four localities of Can Tho, An Giang, Kien Giang and Ca Mau.

The zone will remain the country’s hub of rice production, aquatic breeding and processing until 2020.

The economic zone will see GDP growth of 1.2 times higher than the country’s average during the 2009-2010 and 1.25 times during the                2011-2010        .

The Mekong Delta region has been projected to become a major energy center in Vietnam by 2020 with three big power supply sources of O Mon, Ca Mau, and Kien Luong with a combined capacity of 9,500 MW.

The region’s GDP is expected to account for 11.6 per cent and 13.3 per cent in the national GDP by 2010 and 2020 instead of the current 10.5 per cent, respectively. (Labor)
