U.S. Remains Biggest Importer of Vietnamese Cashew Nuts

The U.S. still takes the lead in importing Vietnamese cashew nuts with total import volume of 9,894 tons, valued at $44.1 million in the first quarter of 2009, figures from the Vietnam Trade Information Center showed.
 
The figures accounted for 31.48% of Vietnam’s total cashew nut export volume, and 31.68% in value.
 
China ranked second with 7,972 tons worth $33.37 million, accounting for nearly 24% of Vietnam’s export value.
 
Holland accounted for 14.28% as spending $19.89 million importing 3,942 tons of Vietnamese cashew nuts.
 
The center said Vietnam exported 31,425 tons of nuts to 23 main markets in Jan-March period, earning $139.3 million, up 4.35% on year in volume but down 3.63% in value.
 
The Vietnam Cashew Nut Association (Vinacas) said cashew nut export price decreased by $1,000-$1,200/ton from previous year to only $4,000-$4,300/ton.
 
Vinacas predicted that the country will export only $600 million worth of cashew nuts in 2009, down 35% against previous year. (Vinanet)
