Climate Change Tops Talks between Vietnam PM and UN Senior Official
Vietnam is drafting a national program on climate change and will soon submit the National Assembly for approval in order to more effectively promote measures against the danger, Prime Minister Dung told the visiting UN official at a meeting May 13.
Receiving UN Deputy Secretary General Dr Asha Rose Migiro in Hanoi, Dung said that Vietnam acknowledged the seriousness of climate change and saw it as a threat to sustainable development.
Dung hoped the UN Development Program would continue its support to the country in the matter.
In reply, the guest said the UN would continue to closely work with Vietnam during the economic crisis and on food security and climate change.
Migiro paid her one-day visit to the Southeast Asian nation May 13 to research Vietnam’s contribution at the UN, UN reform, and how the UN can best respond to Vietnam’s needs for development assistance.
“The UN support program has been increasing its relevance and coherence in Vietnam,” she was quoted by the Vietnam News newspaper as saying yesterday.
“UN reform in Vietnam has been moving forwards so quickly because of the tripartite engagement under strong leadership by the government, a supportive donor community and a very committed UN country team,” Migiro said after concluding her separate meetings with Vietnamese senior leaders and the donor community.
