Many apparel firms, particularly those in Ho Chi Minh City, are facing a serious shortage of both common laborers and technical staff, Le Van Dao, secretary general of Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (Vitas), said.

Currently, the industry employs around two million laborers, Dao said.

The sector is expected to earn between US$8 billion and US$9 billion from exporting apparels outbound and employ 3.5 million workers in 2010.

Industry analysts said many apparel plants have been set up over the past years.

Meanwhile, due to impacts from the global economic slowdown, average income of each apparel worker stands at only VND1.5 million per month.

Low salary, plus with difficulty in seeking for acceptable accommodation in city, have left a large number of apparel workers back homeland.

Le Quoc An, Vitas President said that apart from improving salary and welfare for laborers, enterprises should join hands with local authorities in which their plants were located to settle accommodation for workers. (Pioneer)
