Vitas: Vietnam’s H1 Apparel Exports Down 4.7 per cent On-Yr to US$4B
Vietnam’s apparel exports are estimated to bring in around US$4 billion in the fist half of this year, down 4.7 per cent on-year, said the Vietnam Textile and Garment Association (Vitas).
Nguyen Son, vice general secretary of Vitas, attributed lower export prices to the decrease, although garment and textile firms have received more orders compared to the same period last year to ship jackets to the U.S. and Europe.
The apparel export price fell 15 per cent in the first quarter of 2009, Son added
Bui Van Tien, general director of Viet Tien Garment Company, said that it will need to employ more workers to meet the volume of export contracts that have increased by 20 per cent since the first quarter.
Viet Tien operates 13 garment and textile plants located in the south, creating jobs for 23,000 people.
Experts forecast Vietnam could reach its target of US$9.5 billion from apparel exports this year. (New Hanoi, Vietnam Economic Times)
