Ministers from six member countries of the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) have recently approved an action plan to boost multi-faceted cooperation, including the sharing of energy.

As part of the action plan, the ministers ratified a roadmap to boost trans-border energy trading.

The move aims to help GMS nations have better access to the modern energy sources found in the sub-region, such as hydropower, oil and gas, and coal.

The GMS region includes Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

According to a report conducted jointly by a Vietnamese agency and a Dutch partner, Vietnam’s annual per capita commercial electricity output is lower than other regional countries, standing at only 550 kWh.

Vietnam is estimated to waste around US$1 million worth of energy each day due to inefficient energy use. (Investment)
