Vietnam’s northern province of Thai Nguyen will inject up to VND1.46 trillion (US$86.39 million) into exploring and tapping kaolin, clay, barite, phosphorite, dolomite, and pyrite from now until 2020.

About VND750 billion of the total investment will be used to process these minerals during the 2009 to 2015 period.

By the end of this year, the province aims to start commercial operations of Dam Giao, Luc Ba, Khe Mong and Tan Do barite mines; Phuong Nam 1, Phuong Nam 2 and Ba Son kaolin mines; Tan Huong and Lang Bau clay mines; and La Giang and Lang Lai dolomite mines.

Production capacities of mineral companies in Thai Nguyen province now stand at a modest 30,000 tons of kaolin, 2,000 tons of crude barite and 100,000 tons of dolomite annually, which are much lower than the domestic demand, said the agency without giving the exact figures for the mineral demands of the country.
