Being chosen as a representative for Hospital Management Asia 2009 (HMA 2009), HCMC Medical Association is believed to make HMA 2009 a success. Vietnam Business Forum talks with Dr. Duong Quang Trung, President of HCMC Medical Association and HCMC Medical Practitioner Society.

Acting as Head of HMA 2009, what do you expect from this conference, especially in fields of hospital management and operation which are paid less attention to?
In the health care system, the role of hospitals is essentially important. It is always put under high pressure of receiving and giving treatment to patients. Then, hospital management is a key factor to ensure a high quality medical check up and treatment.

HMA is an international level event of the health care sector, yearly organized in Asian countries with the purpose to continuously improve the quality of hospital management. Concurrently, HMA helps encourage invention, initiatives of technical enhancement to improve community health service quality. HMA 2009 -the first ever organized in Vietnam (HCMC) - gathers 600 delegates.

By focusing on practical instructions, seminars of management skills presented by highly experienced speakers and experts from worldwide, for sure, HMA will contribute to hospital improvement, enhancement of patient care service quality in Vietnamese hospitals.

Why should Vietnamese hospital managers join the next HMA conferences?
As I mentioned above, HMA is an international level event in the health care sector. HMA is sponsored by many international prestigious organizations in the health care sector and in hospital standard verification including Joint Commission International (ICI), Johns Hopkins Medicines International, International Hospital Federation (IHF), World Health Organization (WHO), etc.
HMA is an organization of experienced hospital managers from Asian Pacific region and the world. HMA is promising to help open visions and exchange opportunities for delegates in a high quality learning environment.
It is very useful for Vietnamese hospital managers to participate in HMA 2009 and next conferences. HMA helps improve hospital services and secure patient security.

Why is HCMC Medical Association chosen as a Vietnamese representative for HMA 2009? Is it because of HCMC Medical Association’s activities or your prestige and personal impact?
HMA has so far been organized in many other countries in Asia such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines.

Vietnam was selected as the host of HMA 2009 because Vietnam has an encouraging economic growth rate, political stability and is a member of WTO and is a non-permanent member of United Nations Security Council. Many foreigners visit Vietnam to understand the country and they recognize the development of hospital management in Vietnam.

Last year, at HMA 2008 in the Philippines, Vietnamese delegates exchanged and agreed on hosting HMA 2009 in HCMC due to advantages like transportation, logistics. Vietnam suggested that the HCMC Medical Association and the HCMC Medical Practitioner Society should be partners of OIC – a professional event organizer of HMA.

HCMC Medical Association is a non-government organization, consisting of 46 membership societies of all departments, 20,000 members. And, HCMC Medical Practitioner Society gathers nearly 30 private hospitals. This is highly appreciated by foreign partners. With supports from the Government, HCMC People’s Committee, Ministry of Health, Vietnam Medical Association, the HMA 2009 is believed to be successful.

For me, as the President of HCMC Medical Association and HCMC Medical Practitioner, I am only a member of Organization Board of Vietnam and foreign partners.
