Egypt Seeking Vietnam's Help in Seafood Development
Egypt wants to boost cooperation and seek Vietnam’s assistance in developing its seafood sector, the state-run Voice of Vietnam Station said, citing the Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif.
The Egyptian PM said at a meeting with Vietnamese Ambassador, Pham Sy Tam, who arrived in Egypt on August 17 for official visit.
Seafood sector is one of Vietnam’s strength, the PM added.
The Vietnamese ambassador proposed that both countries promote the exchange of products and accelerate the implementation of agreements and memorandums of understanding signed by their joint sub-committees in October last year.
Two-way trade between the two countries remained low at US$178 million in 2008 as they have not yet tapped each other’s potential effectively, Tam said.
There is now a great demand in Egypt for agricultural, forest and seafood products because the country can meet only 35% of domestic demand.
“Vietnamese shrimp, tra and basa pangasius are on sale at most supermarkets in Egypt,” the source said.
In the first ten months last year, Vietnam sold US$60 million worth of seafood to Egypt, according to statistics previously released by the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP). (VoV)
