Vietnam Agro Material Imports See Sharp Fall Jan-Aug
Vietnam is estimated to have spent US$3.51 billion on importing seven major agricultural materials in the first eight months of 2009, with sharp decreases in almost all products, the Government’s General Statistics Office (GSO) said.
Among them, imports of vegetable and animal oil, timber and wood products, and milk and milk products decreased most, the GSO said.
In the January to August period, imports of vegetable and animal oil decreased 31.8% to US$349 million from a year ago, while imports of timber and wood products dropped 31.2% to only US$539 million, and milk and milk products were down 15.9% to US$304 million.
The country also witnessed a decrease in pesticide imports by 14.3% against the same period last year to US$309 million, and paper imports were down 8.3% to US$474 million.
The GSO figures also report that imports of wheat increased 67% in volume to 861,000 tons but were down 2% in value to US$217 million.
Imports of animal feed, however, slightly rose 0.9% in value to US$1.32 billion, according to the GSO. (GSO August 2009)
