The Southern Airports Corporation has invested an additional VND850 billion (US$47.64 million) into a project to upgrade Can Tho Airport’s runway.

The project aims to lengthen the runway to 3,000 meters from the current 2,400 meters to meet the increasing demand for transport services in 2010 and the following years.

Once completed, the runway can welcome Boeing 777 and Boeing 747 aircraft and is expected to serve between two and three million passengers annually.

So far this year, the airport in the Mekong Delta region has served 111,924 passengers and 1,500 tons of cargo.

Currently, only Vietnam Airlines operates daily Can Tho-Hanoi flights. The airline plans to open international flights from the airport to Southeast Asian countries next year. (Laborer)
