Vietnam is the only country in the Asia - Pacific region to jump five places to the 56th out of 66 countries and territories in the 2009 Global IT Industry Competitiveness Index, according to the report by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). Australia, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea were in the Top 20 in the ranking.

“Vietnam is one of a few Asia - Pacific countries to improve its level. In the current economic context, the fact that Vietnamese government continues supporting the development of the IT industry was the important factor for pushing up the economic recovery for the purpose of long-term economic development,” said Atty Claro Parlade, BSA's manager in Asia-Pacific region.

This was the third year that the study has been conducted, to assess and compare the IT environment in 66 countries and define priority areas to improve the competitiveness of the IT sector in each nation.

According to EIU, this year’s study covered six indicators, including overall business environment, IT infrastructure, human capital, legal environment, research and development environment and support for the development of the IT industry.
