The Vietnam Internet Association has been recently established with the purpose of assembling and uniting for cooperation, support and protection of members’ rights and interests, improving technologies and quality and contributing to the application and development of internet services in Vietnam in the process of international economic integration. This will also be a meeting place of internet service suppliers and developers in Vietnam.

Mr Vu Hoang Lien, Director of Vietnam Data Communications (VDC) and the head of Vietnam Internet Association establishment campaign, said: The idea of the association establishment came after a meeting between Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Le Nam Thang and several internet service providers in 2007. Then, five internet service providers in Vietnam, including VNPT, Viettel, EVN Telecom, SPT and Netnam unanimously signed an agreement to lay the stepping stone for the formation of the Vietnam Internet Association. The Ministry of Home Affairs granted the establishment licence on June 23, 2010. Currently, the association has 66 members and expects to expand its memberships in the coming time.

The first congress of the association is scheduled to open in October 9, 2010 and the association also agrees to take December 1 as the Vietnam Internet Day.

One of main upcoming agenda of the association is to expand the internet services in the health sector and enlarge the coverage of internet services to more people, especially in remote areas.
