Saigon Postel Corporation (SPT) has helped make the Vietnamese Post-Telecommunications market more diversified, create more healthy and equal competition, and boost both sector and national development. Vietnam Business Forum interviewed Mr Ho Hong Son – SPT General Director.

After 15 years of operations, SPT has become a leading company in Telecommunications, Internet and software production. Could please talk about your achievements?
Though SPT’s 15-year operation period is not very long and the company has undergone ups and downs, SPT has really become one of leading businesses in supplying Telecommunications, Post and Internet services in the Vietnamese market, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City. SPT has also been among leading Telecommunications companies in all fields such as Mobile telecommunications with Sfone project, Landline telecommunications ̣(including landline phones and landline broadband) in Ho Chi Minh City, and has planned to expand its services into nationwide. One of SPT’s important projects is its cooperation with Smart Solutions and Technologies Corp̣ (SST) to develop infrastructure and telecommunications services in the Phu My Hung urban area.

In addition, the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), a service jointly developed by SPT and IPT Limited Company (IPT), has been attracted a large number of local and foreign subscribers and partners. Besides, in order to come up with the common development trend, SPT has been gradually investing in and developing broadband services as well as digital content services based on its and partners’ infrastructure and telecommunications systems.
Particularly, in addition to the telecommunications service, SPT is also recognized for its telecommunications, transmission and post infrastructure with the Saigon Post SGP trademark.

How has SPT paid attention to man power development?
In addition to a great demand for other types of human resources, the need for high-quality manpower meeting current and future development requirement is the most important factor in order to develop and integrate into the Vietnamese and international telecommunications markets that obtain the highest growth rate and attract a large number of high intellects. Being fully aware of the matter, SPT always pays due attention to, seek and devise leading solutions to a human resource investment and development plan in order to ensure its development. Thus, SPT has been gradually implementing measures and policies that are synchronic and appropriate in labour recruitment, organization and assignment as well as human resource training and development, and solutions to create an effective working mechanism.

What is Vietnam’s current ICT human resources? What should be done to boost ICT development?
In the view of a businessman on overall situation, I see that Vietnam’s current Information Technology and Telecommunications human resources are insufficient and of low quality. In order to develop manpower meeting development and integration requirements, attention should be paid to the following:

Firstly, a research should be conducted in order to define the real demand (in terms of both quantity and quality) for Information Technology and Telecommunications human resources at present and in the next five and ten years.
Secondly, attention should be paid to implementation of plans via adding subjects and programmes on training Information Technology and Telecommunications human resources to school syllabuses due to the necessity of integrating human resources development socialization with training. Then, it is important to form and develop an open environment for IT training, development, creation and applications domestically and internationally. Also, it is essential to create a suitable mechanism for development, usage and priority to the talented, particularly in fields of creation, science and high-tech.

What is SPT’s development plan?
In the next decade, SPT plans to focus on development of infrastructure and services under a slogan “Mobile-Broadband-Digital content services”. As a result, based on its current infrastructure and services, SPT has been prioritizing investment and development so as to serve clients with new services that will be based on mobile telecommunications development (such as 3G and 4G services), broadband services (both in landline and mobile) and particularly advanced, special and attractive digital content services.
